Andrews Government Fire Services Levy Hike Will Cost Yarra Ranges Dearly

18 May 2015

Yarra Ranges residents are being warned by State Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe that they can expect to pay big increases in their property based Fire Services Levy (FSL).

The state government has outlined a huge 7.2 per cent increase in the FSL receipts in the state budget from $585.8 million to $627.9 million.

“This money has to come from somewhere, and unfortunately the somewhere is going to be property owners thanks to Premier Daniel Andrews,” Ms Fyffe said.

“The 7.2 per cent hike compares to annual inflation rate of the last 12 months of just 1.8 per cent. So a further 5.4 per cent increase has been snuck in by the Premier.

In contrast, the former Coalition Government used the FSL to pay for new tankers, equipment and planned rebuilds of fire stations.

“What is unclear is if the Andrews Government going to use this huge increase to boost funding for the CFA?

“It is disappointing that the Premier’s pre-election rhetoric about his government being focused on people and better services has not lived up to the hype just six months in.

“It is insincere for the Andrews Government to be expecting a pat on the back for capping council rates when they are secretly upping state taxes hoping no one will notice.
