Esther Park upgrade denied by the Premier
Evelyn State MP Christine Fyffe has expressed her deep disappointment in Parliament with the Andrews Government for failing to provide $250,000 in funding for the modernisation of the Esther Park Pavilion, home of the Mooroolbark “Barkers” Soccer Club.
“It was with great disappointment I was advised by the new Minister for Sport that the $250,000 the Coalition was going to invest in a facility upgrade will not be carried done under the Andrews Government,” said Mrs Fyffe.
The Barkers have a rich history and a strong following with five senior men’s team and two senior women’s teams competing in both the Football Federation Victoria Provisional and State Leagues and the Bayside Football Association Leagues.
“The State Government’s decision will have adverse effects on community health and youth engagement, as sport is one of the most popular recreational activities in the Yarra Ranges.
“If our facilities are not up to the same standards as rival clubs across the state, membership may be impacted.
“I think the Andrews Government underestimates how many families are deeply involved in the club, with parents taking on roles such as training, fundraising and team management.
“What has made the Minister’s response even more disappointing is his lack of recognition of the work the club is doing in reaching out to new citizens such as the Chinese community.
“I urge the Minister for Sport to reconsider his decision in the interests of fair play,” said Mrs Fyffe.
